Pair of Japanese Tansu Chests (Keyaki Wood with Iron Hardware on Modern Steel Bases)

$2,100

Antiques & Decorative Arts · Meiji to Taisho Period, circa 1880–1920

A matched pair of Japanese tansu chests in keyaki (Japanese elm) wood, dating to the Meiji–Taisho period (circa 1880–1920), each featuring two deep drawers with boldly decorative iron hardware including large circular engraved escutcheon plates, bail-ring pulls, and corner iron strapping. The left chest retains an additional central hasp-lock fitting with cross-bar ironwork, while both display the characteristic warm, light-blond grain of keyaki wood in well-worn, honest condition. Each chest has been fitted onto a modern welded steel frame base, elevating them to comfortable sideboard height and giving them a contemporary industrial-meets-traditional aesthetic that is highly marketable today.
