Japanese Red Lacquered Tansu Chest (Isho Dansu / Merchant's Chest)
$3,850
Antiques & Decorative Arts · Meiji to Taisho Period, circa 1880–1920
A substantial Japanese tansu chest of the Meiji to Taisho period (circa 1880–1920), constructed of keyaki (Japanese elm) with a striking red lacquer finish and extensive forged iron (kurogane) decorative hardware including corner reinforcements, elaborate floral and chrysanthemum lock plates, brass ring escutcheons, and iron bail handles. The chest features a stacked, multi-drawer configuration with both full-width and split drawers, plus a lower door compartment, all set on a low stand/base with side iron carrying handles. The lacquer shows honest age-related wear, crazing, and loss consistent with 100+ years of use, while the iron hardware retains its original dark patina with decorative embossed detailing.
