Inuit Drum Dancer Sculpture — Green Soapstone/Serpentine Body with Bone/Ivory Head and Wooden Drum

$368

Antiques & Decorative Arts · Mid-to-Late 20th Century, circa 1960–1990

A hand-carved Inuit drum dancer figure rendered in mottled green soapstone/serpentine, depicting a stout figure in a parka leaning forward in a traditional drumming pose, holding a round wooden frame drum (qilaut) in one hand and a bone or antler drumstick in the other. The head is separately carved from bone or ivory and fitted into the stone body, a hallmark multi-material technique seen in mid-century Canadian Inuit carvings from communities such as Cape Dorset, Rankin Inlet, and Holman Island. The piece displays naturalistic detailing in the parka stitching and expressive facial carving, consistent with work produced between the 1960s and 1980s.
