Southeast Asian Hand-Carved Wood Figure of Kneeling Child in Prayer (Wai Gesture)

$138

Antiques & Decorative Arts · Mid-to-Late 20th Century, circa 1950–1980

A hand-carved hardwood figure depicting a kneeling child performing the traditional Southeast Asian prayer gesture (Wai/Namaste), with polychrome painted details including a white headband, light-blue shorts, and dark facial features. The figure exhibits characteristic folk-art tool marks across the surface, suggesting hand carving rather than machine production, consistent with Thai or Burmese tourist/souvenir craft traditions of the mid-to-late 20th century. Standing approximately 10–12 inches tall, the piece retains much of its original paint and displays an even patina consistent with age.
