Chinese Carved Wood Bust of a Court Official Wearing Guanmao Hat with Feather Finial

$1,925

Antiques & Decorative Arts · Ming to Qing Dynasty, circa 17th–19th century

A substantial carved hardwood bust depicting a Chinese court official or dignitary dressed in formal robes and wearing a guanmao (官帽) official's hat crowned by a decorative feather finial, consistent with Ming or Qing dynasty court iconography. The carving exploits the pronounced concentric grain of the wood—likely cedar (杉木, shānmù) or pine—to dramatic decorative effect, with fine chisel work defining facial features, collar details, and drapery folds. Traces of original polychrome lacquer survive in the recesses, and the rough, fragmentary base suggests this bust was once part of a larger seated or standing figure.
